This Manly Courtyard Garden job is a true Harrison’s Landscaping project. When we were first contacted by the clients who live on the Northern Beaches, their backyard was nothing more than a half dead lawn area.
Lucky for us our clients turned out to be great people who put a lot of trust and faith in us to come up with a design that would totally transform their courtyard garden. Their brief to us was to create an entertaining space with both lounging and dining areas.
We always try to create some continuity between the inside and the out (especially for smaller gardens) and in this instance we did that by using hardwood timber decking to marry in with the internal floor boards. We also raised the external level so you no longer stepped down out of the house.
To create the designated lounging area, we designed a funky cantilevered timber seat, the perfect place to site and have a cold drink. The dining area is opposite to the lounging area and sits between a rendered wall and the raised sandstone planter. The back drop to the dining area is a fence made of Scyon, traditionally a product used to clad the outside of buildings.
We kept the planting very simple and super low maintenance. The garden was already surrounded by large beautiful trees and as we didn’t want to try to compete with what was obviously working so well, we went for a mix of Dianella ‘Little Jess’ and Tradescantia ‘Fire Bugs’.
This project was definitely one of the most enjoyable to work on. We love designing gardens for small spaces and this is a perfect example of what can be created.
